How Much Should I Water My Lawn?

Keeping your grass in a healthy state of green and free of weeds and disease requires just the right amount of water at just the right time. So, how much water does your lawn need? Keep reading for advice on when and how much to water your lawn.

How Much Water Does My Lawn Need?

The answer is it depends. The prevailing climate, quality of soil, variety of grass and amount of fertilizer used will all factor into how much water your lawn needs to stay lush and green. Generally speaking, an average lawn in average soils and climate conditions requires no less than 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water per week, doled out at about a half-inch at a time.

By using rain gauges set up in a few locations within the watering area, you can determine how much your sprinkler system puts out per hour to determine how long you need to run it per zone, or when to move the sprinkler if you don’t have an automatic irrigation system installed.

When Should I Water My Lawn?

To avoid creating a shallow root system, you should give the grass its minimum half-inch drink three times per week rather than a little each day. This deep watering forces the roots to push down through the soil for their water and helps them develop drought resistance.

Watering should be done in the early morning before the breeze strikes up. This allows the blades to dry out in the sun during the day and resist fungi and mildew.

What About My Trees and Using Fertilizer?

Your other landscaping elements should be watered on their own systems or separately from the lawn since watering isn’t a one-size-fits-all proposition. After you fertilize, your grass will require more water for a while. All that good grub will cause it to grow faster and work up a good thirst.

Of course, if you fertilize and water your lawn, it will need mowing sooner rather than later. You certainly need the right mowing equipment to help you in that department! At Ralph Helm, Inc., you’ll find an incredible selection of landscaping equipment just waiting to be put to good use.
