Before performing any regular maintenance on the LS 27 TB log splitter, be sure that the equipment is turned off and has had time to cool down if it was recently in active operation. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against the log splitter’s engine. Make sure that any hydraulic pressure has been relieved before working on the equipment.
Before performing maintenance, it’s a good idea to make sure that proper safety attire is being worn. In this case, that should include a set of gloves and proper safety glasses that can guard against fluid discharge, built-up dirt, and even debris. The hydraulic filter should be checked for debris, damage, or excessive dirt build-up before each use. After the equipment has been used for a total of 50 hours, this filter must be replaced completely with an OEM model. The proper filter for this particular log splitter is a 10-micron filter.
Clamps regulating the suction hose should be checked once each season, while the clamps attached to the return hose should be checked before the equipment is used each time. If these clamps require more than just tightening, and need to be replaced due to damage or regular wear, be sure to use OEM Troy-Bilt parts and perform a full replacement before operating the equipment.
Both sides of the log splitter’s beam should be lubricated before each use. Generally, focus any lubrication efforts on the area where the beam comes into direct contact with the splitting edge.
